An important trading power in the Mediterranean between 839 and around 1200, located at the mouth of a deep ravine, surrounded by dramatic cliffs.

The town dates back to the 6th Century, and is famed for its production of Limoncello liqueur and home-made paper used throughout Italy for wedding invitations.

Amafi is the burial place of St Andrew, the patron Saint of Scotland, and golden requiary which originally housed his skull and another one used to parade the bones are paraded around Amalfi on holy days.

Places to encounter include 10th Century Sant’Andrea cathedral and the 13th century Chiostro del Paradiso.
